HABITAT HABITAT PROJECT April 10, 2004 - This Months Habitat Project is at Camp Cady, but due to the Easter Weekend not many will be there. If you wish to do some work however there is plenty to do, just go on out there and check in with Bruce Kenyon who will be there this weekend and he will put you to work. April 24-25, 2004 - Since our regular Habitat day fell on Easter weekend we decided at this months meeting to make this a habitat weekend at Camp Cady, those interested in participating check with Jerry Gehrls for details and there may be room for you to stay in the bunkhouse overnight.
What is Habitat? Low rainfall averages and severe seasonal weather such as droughts, extreme cold or hot periods can decimate a population of upland game and wildlife due to a lack of water.
California (Valley) Quail In an effort to prevent the needless depopulation of upland game and wildlife, Q.U. Chapter 256 conducts numerous habitat outings. On these outings we maintain and make repairs to guzzlers. A guzzler is a natural spring or man-made source of water which is a concrete pad and reservoir.
Gambels Quail Required maintenance consists of clearing brush away from the collecting pad and water reservoir and repairing cracks. It also gives the members a chance to get out into the wilderness and work together as a team benefiting both the local wildlife and themselves. Mountain Quail If you think you would like to attend any of our habitat outings, call or email Jerry Gehrls at 714-774-3465

April 5, Sat. 6, 2002 to start work on the fencing project at Camp Cady and a lot was accomplished but more needs to be done. On Apr. 20 the fencing was completed at the project, but there will be much more work and more volunteers needed. (Pictures were taken of the project and will be displayed here as soon as they are processed.) The Camp Cady project is a joint venture between Santa Clarita, Riverside, Orange County and San Gabriel chapters and the Department of Fish & Game. We currently are planting fields with crops designed primarily to feed Migratory game birds (mostly doves) and also quail or other wildlife in the area. If you wish to help and have the time please contact us for all the details.
